Do's and Dont's during exercise

Do
  • Write down your fitness goals.
  • Assess your current fitness level before starting an exercise program. By doing so, you’ll be able to establish goals that meet your specific fitness needs.
  • Consider talking with your health care provider before embarking on a fitness program, particularly if you are struggling with a health condition such as diabetes or obesity.
  • Always warm-up before your workout and cool down afterward.
  • Don’t overdo it! Try doing too much at once and you’ll burn out swiftly. Slowly increase the intensity of your workouts.
  • Diversify your workout routine. If you do the same exercises day after day, you’ll quickly tire and are more likely to skip workouts.
  • Work out with a friend. You’ll help motivate each other.
  • Drink plenty of water before, during and after your workouts.
  • Start small. Aim for just 10-15 minutes of exercise when you're just starting out.
  • Take less weight and don't do reps very fast.
  • Take 2 mins break after every exercise.
Don’t
  • Over-train. Your body needs time to recover in between workouts
  • Skip breakfast. Eating breakfast will jump-start your metabolism and provide you with the energy you need to get through the day.
  • Skip stretching. Do it after every workout.
  • Skimp on sleep. It'll give you the energy you need to focus on your exercises.
  • Set unrealistic goals. A healthy rate of weight loss is 1-2 pounds per week. If you have 50 pounds to lose, don’t expect it to come off overnight--you’ll set yourself up for disappointment.
  • Compare your successes and failures to others. Everyone is unique, and what works for some may not work for others.
  • Work out randomly. Work out on a consistent schedule to maximize the benefits and help you form the habit.
  • Give up. Consider talking with a friend in times of discouragement.
  • Forget to reward yourself on occasion. Just don't use food as your rewards.

Tips for care of eyes

As we all know that eyes are most special and delicate part of our body. Without eyes we cant do anything. Many of people take of their legs, hand, nails etc but they forget about eyes. So here are some tips for care of your eyes.
  1. Regular checkups. When was the last time you had an eye exam? If it was at 3 years of age, chances are you’re due. The AAO recommends an eye exam before 5 years of age to check for childhood problems like amblyopia (sometimes called lazy eye) or strabismus (misaligned eyes), and then on an as-needed basis (vision problems or injuries) up to 19 years of age. One exam in your 20s, and two in your 30s can identify problems which may benefit from early treatment. While it’s normal for vision to change with age, serious eye problems like glaucoma and macular degeneration (deterioration of retina that causes loss of detail vision) can be treated if detected early. So step up the eye exams after 40 years of age to every two to four years; after age 65, every one to two years. Anyone with diabetes, a family history of eye problems or African-Americans over the age of 40 should check with their doctor about more frequent visits. (African-Americans may need more frequent checkups in middle age because of an increased risk for glaucoma.)
  2. SPF for the eyes. Sunglasses don’t just prevent crows’ feet from squinting, they also block harmful ultraviolet and other rays than can play a role in the development of cataracts and macular degeneration. Fair-skinned caucasians are at the greatest risk for the latter. Be sure your sunglasses have 100 percent UV protection. “The blue wavelengths--violet and blue--hit the retina,” says Dr. Lylas Mogk, co-author of Macular Degeneration: The Complete Guide to Saving and Maximizing Your Sight. “The best filters against blue are in the amber-orange-brown range of commercial sunglasses.” You should always wear sunglasses when outside (and not just in the summer) but especially in high glare areas around snow or water. A wide-brimmed hat is great for blocking rays—even if it counteracts the cool of your aviators.
  3. Eye protection. Sunglasses aren’t the only protective eyewear you should don. Obviously anyone working around construction, manufacturing—any job with machinery and flying particles—must wear eye protection. But even when you’re working around the house, you should guard your eyes. “Even while hanging a picture, plaster or a nail can fly into your eye,” warns Dr. Iwach. Any hardware store sells inexpensive clear plastic eye protection.
  4. Contact care. “Contacts are a great tool, but they come with responsibility,” says Dr. Iwach. Be sure to have a pair of glasses with a recent prescription so that if you get any irritation you can change over. Wearing your contacts when your eyes are irritated can turn a simple problem (irritation) into a significant problem (a corneal ulcer). Make sure you care for the lenses properly. “I can’t believe people who pop a lens in their mouth and then put it in their eye. That is not a good idea unless you want to be seeing the eye doctor a lot,” warns Dr. Iwach. Make sure your solutions aren’t expired, keep your contacts clean—and keep them out of your mouth.
  5. Eye candy. Are carrots really good for your eyes? “Carrots are rich in vitamin A, which the retina needs,” says Dr. Lylas Mogk. “But we’re not in danger of having vitamin A deficiencies.” Green leafy veggies like kale, collard and mustard greens, and spinach are good for the eyes because they contain lutein, which studies indicate can reverse symptoms of macular degeneration.  And getting plenty of omega-3 fatty acids from fish and flax can help prevent dry eyes. But avoid omega-6 fatty acids, which is tricky in the American diet. Omega-6s are in vegetable oils. “There are very few processed or packaged foods that don’t have vegetable oils,” notes Dr. Mogk. “And the omega-6s counteract the good omega-3s.”
  6. Eye lube. As we age, we experience more dry eye symptoms. “The biggest reason people have dry eyes is that the tear film doesn’t have the right consistency of water, mucus and oil,” says Dr. Mogk. The oil part of your tears comes from little glands at the margin of your eyelids. As you blink, oil is supposed to coat the eyes. But if this coating is insufficient, the tear film evaporates and eyes feel dry. This triggers reflex tearing, which is why your eyes water when they get dry and irritated. Omega-3 helps with this. Also, heat and air conditioning can cause dry eyes, especially if you sit near a vent or fan unit. Make sure that the vent in your car isn’t blowing toward your face.
  7. Quit smoking. Need another reason to quit smoking? You got it: Smoking increases the risk and accelerates the development of cataracts, macular degeneration and optic nerve damage. “I’d be more afraid of losing your vision than lung cancer,” says Dr. Iwach.
  8. Eye strain. Any focused work means you don’t blink as frequently. And all the computer work and internet surfing can take a toll. It’s always good to take a break from activities which involve prolonged staring. And artificial tears can help reduce eye irritation, lubricating the eyes to help you work longer.
  9. Talk to your family. Eye problems are often hereditary. If you are diagnosed with glaucoma or another eye condition, share that information with your immediate and extended family. “It’s a way to give the gift of vision for the rest of their life,” notes Dr. Iwach. The sooner people are diagnosed, the more that can be done to treat and prevent further damage.
  10. Stay healthy. We’ve already seen how eating right (veggies over processed foods) helps with eye health. Exercise increases circulation, which can lower pressure within the eyes, which helps with those who have glaucoma. Getting regular overall physicals may lead to early detection of diseases like diabetes or other systemic conditions that can lead to eye problems.

Boost your immune system.

1. Eat lean protein at every meal. No one food will magically fend off the flu, but certain nutrients take the lead in helping protect your body from billions of bacteria, viruses, and other germs—and protein is one of them. One of the reasons is that the antibodies that help fight disease are actually made of protein. Another reason: Many foods high in protein also contain other immune-boosting nutrients. Lean cuts of beef and pork, as well as protein from beans, soy, and seafood (particularly oysters and crab), contain zinc—a mineral that helps up the production of infection-fighting white blood cells; even mild zinc deficiencies can increase your susceptibility to infections. Nuts, like almonds and cashews, are also good sources of protein, as well as magnesium, both of which help support a healthy immune system.
2. Shoot for 5 cups of fruits and veggies a day. Almost any kind is good, but if you’re going to pick and choose, opt for the ones rich in vitamins A, C, and E. Here’s why: Vitamin A (which you get from sweet potatoes, carrots, and dark leafy greens) helps white blood cells fight off infections more effectively; it also helps regulate the immune system. Citrus fruits (like lemons, oranges, and grapefruit), as well as bell peppers, papayas, and broccoli, contain vitamin C, which improves the absorption of iron from plant-based foods and helps the immune system protect against disease. And vitamin E, found in nuts, seeds, and turnip greens, has been shown in scientific studies to combat flu and upper respiratory infections. If you eat a variety of greens (and oranges and yellows and reds) as part of a balanced diet, you’ll get all the good stuff you need to help fight disease. Taking a multivitamin or mineral supplement may help in some cases, but talk to your doctor—sometimes too-high doses of certain minerals can cause imbalances and actually suppress your immune response.
3. Take a 10-minute walk a few times a day. Getting a total of 20 to 30 minutes of daily physical activity can bolster many defenses of the immune system. Exercise gets antibodies and white blood cells moving through the body faster, so they may detect illnesses sooner; plus, an increase in circulation may also trigger the release of hormones that “warn” immune cells of intruding pathogens. Keep your workouts moderate; high-intensity activity, such as a marathon running or intense gym training, could actually decrease the amount of white blood cells circulating through the body and up your risk of illness.
4. Get your vitamin D levels checked. About 50 nmol/L is generally enough to maintain overall health; less than 30 nmol/L is too low for most people. New research suggests vitamin D could boost immune response, and too-low levels may be linked to an increase in seasonal colds and flu. Many of us are deficient in vitamin D, which we can get from the sun and very few foods. Talk to your doctor; you may need a supplement to boost your numbers
5. Reduce your stress levels. Do yoga, play with your dog, listen to music—find ways to chill out because research shows stressalters how well your immune system works. Preliminary research published in the journal Biological Psychiatryexamined two groups of people—caregivers of family members with cancer and individuals without that type of stress. The scientists found something goes awry in the caregivers’ white blood cells, leaving them less responsive to inflammation and raising their risk of illness.
6. Cook with olive and canola oils. These contain healthy fats, which act as a lubricant for cells. This lubricant improves flexibility and communication between the cells, which promotes immune function. Just be careful that you’re not consuming too many omega-6 fats in the meantime: Research shows that people who consume disproportionately more 6s (found in the soybean oil used in most processed snack foods) than 3s are at higher risk for inflammation and immune system problems.
7. Limit your drinks. One is okay for most people, two is fine for some, but drinking any more could suppress the immune system. New research out of Brown University showed excessive alcohol consumption is toxic to immune system cells called dendritic cells, which play a critical role in helping seek and destroy invading microbes. This could lead to serious, and even life-threatening, infections, not to mention increased vulnerability to the cold and flu virus.

Tricks to keep your skin glowing

Revive your face
When your face feels dull and exhausted, rejuvenate it and brighten your face with this simple skin patting technique using the soft pads of your fingertips. As your eyes are likely to develop eye-bags due to fluid retention, start at the top of the cheek bones. Pat with your fingers quickly towards the nose, then back to the cheek bones in an upward motion, coming around to the temples and upward across the brows.

After that, apply some moisturiser using upward strokes, moving up the neck to the jawline. Purse your lips as you tap at the outer corners of the mouth and then on the cheeks. Soon, you will notice your skin turning into pink, which is essentially a rush of oxygen that's brightening and tightening your face.

Sleep straight
Your best bet for smoother, wrinkle-free skin is to sleep face up, on your back. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, sleeping in the same position can lead to wrinkles that don't disappear once you're up. Also, sleeping on your side increases wrinkles on the cheeks and chin, while sleeping face down gives you a furrowed brow.

Rub-a-dub-dub
Not only does it feel great, a facial massage can help stimulate your skin's fibroblasts (connective cells) to release collagen and restore some of the elasticity that gets lost with age. But don't pay someone to do it. Just five minutes a night, massaging in your favourite moisturiser, using tender, sweeping movements, will have just the same effect.

White bread dread
To avoid spots on your skin, keep away from white bread. Although doctors say diet has no bearing on acne, a recent Australian study showed that a L o w - G l y c e m i c Index Diet helped decrease spots. This means swapping white refined carbs such as bread, cereal and pasta for wholemeal varieties.

Sunscreen secret
Studies show that right-handed people put more sunscreen on the left side of their body than their right and vice-versa. This means important areas miss out on adequate sun protection. Try swapping hands during application to ensure more even coverage.

Red wine's fine
Grapes contain resveratrol, which is one of the most powerful anti-ageing antioxidants yet discovered. Studies suggest it can help maintain a youthful complexion by fighting damaging free radicals. A small glass of red wine every other day will boost your intake. Don't overdo it though, for obvious reasons.

Wish on a fish
At the end of it all, fat is what maintains healthy skin. In particular, getting more of the essential omega-3 fats found in salmon and other oily fish can help keep skin supple and ease conditions like eczema. US dermatologists even credit omega-3s with reducing skin inflammation that is responsible for sagging and wrinkles. One to two portions a week will boost your intake.

Ways to boost thyroid function

1. Eat more of these great sources of iodine to enhance thyroid function:
  • Low fat cheese
  • Cow’s milk
  • Eggs
  • Low fat ice cream
  • Low fat yogurt
  • Saltwater fish
  • Seaweed (including kelp, dulce, nori)
  • Shellfish
  • Soy sauce
2. Eat less of these foods; they slow your thyroid because they block your thyroid and your medication from producing thyroid hormone properly, especially when eaten raw. Cooking these foods inactivates their anti-thyroid properties. These foods are called goitrogens, which are chemicals that lower thyroid function. Eat these foods sparingly or only once every four days:
  • Almonds
  • Cauliflower (Any vegetable that falls into the broccoli family is a goitrogen and shouldn’t be eaten more than twice a week if you have hypothyroidism.)
  • Millet
  • Pears
  • Turnips
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Corn
  • Mustard
  • Pine nuts
  • Cabbage
  • Kale
  • Peaches
  • Soy (Isoflavones block iodine)
  • Canola oil
  • Peanuts
  • Spinach
3. Workout every day. All you need is a pair of sneakers and a watch, and you’re ready to go. For optimal thyroid function, you must exercise at least three days a week for 40 minutes per workout. I strongly suggest working out/walking every day so your thyroid gets a boost daily to correct the condition until your thyroid is running at an optimal rate. Circuit training is also great way to lower insulin levels and increase thyroid function. This is easy to do in the comfort of your own home by doing pushups, lunges and sit-ups back to back without rest, pushing yourself a bit to get out of breath.

Ways to maintain weight loss

  1. 1
Divide the weight loss program in two parts. The first being the effort put towards shedding off those extra kilos while maintaining the lost weight at the same time. One shouldn’t forget that there is yet another task waiting ahead after the weight loss plan though and that is the continued maintenance of your new weight.
  2. 2
Monitor the calorie intake. Do this in order to continue enjoying new confidence post weight loss. Therefore, it becomes important to plan a diet with the right amount of the calories along with other nutrients. If we deprive ourselves of these important stuffs, it could lead to serious health problems later on.

  3. 3
Choose the correct food. This is also an important step towards weight maintenance plan. Try to make your eating habit a healthy one and understand the fact that the healthy food could also be made tasty without that extra dip of cheese. Include a lot of fiber based food along with vegetables and fruits. One should try to avoid high fat and high sugar food as far as possible. These little details could lead to very exciting results ahead.

  4. 4
Burn off extra calorie through physical activity. This is one of the most known and accepted forms towards the weight management program. One should try and stick to the theory of: “Always burn out more calories than what you consume”. By doing so, one can easily avoid the storage of fat in the body. Indulging yourself in your favorite sport could also be a very fun and interesting step in the weight loss plan.

  5. 5
Be aware of your own body's limitations. The fact that human beings vary in terms of genetic differences can’t be ignored. Losing weight could be a simple for a few people but it may not be the same for others because of the genetic differences. No two bodies are alike hence, if something works for one, it is not necessary that it will work for the others. So, it becomes important to plan out the health regimen as per one’s body and avoid aping others. Healthy lifestyle is the result of healthy eating and healthy thinking. “Fit for life not fat for life” should be the motto. With these positive thoughts and little more effort, we can make our life full of happiness.
  6. 6
Take a regiment of vitamins including high dosages of B12, which aid in speeding up the metabolism.

Tips for Anger management

1. Think before you speak

In the heat of the moment, it's easy to say something you'll later regret. Take a few moments to collect your thoughts before saying anything — and allow others involved in the situation to do the same.

2. Once you're calm, express your anger

As soon as you're thinking clearly, express your frustration in an assertive but nonconfrontational way. State your concerns and needs clearly and directly, without hurting others or trying to control them.

3. Get some exercise

Physical activity can help reduce stress that can cause you to become angry. If you feel your anger escalating, go for a brisk walk or run, or spend some time doing other enjoyable physical activities.

4. Take a timeout

Timeouts aren't just for kids. Give yourself short breaks during times of the day that tend to be stressful. A few moments of quiet time might help you feel better prepared to handle what's ahead without getting irritated or angry.

5. Identify possible solutions

Instead of focusing on what made you mad, work on resolving the issue at hand. Does your child's messy room drive you crazy? Close the door. Is your partner late for dinner every night? Schedule meals later in the evening — or agree to eat on your own a few times a week. Remind yourself that anger won't fix anything and might only make it worse.
